Rudy Giuliani - First Impressions

Rudy Giuliani
Current Job: Security speaker and consultant
Previous Job: Mayor of New York
Presidential history: This is his first campaign.
Book (if you’re running for President, they make you write a book): Leadership.
Interesting facts I remember:
- Rudy was Mayor of New York on September 11, 2001.
- He reminds you of that fact every chance he gets.
- He’s right in doing so; we shouldn’t forget it. It’s the fundamental political event of the generation.
- As Mayor, he led a drive to clean up New York, particularly Times Square
- Part of that drive including cracking down on low-level lawbreakers, panhandlers and the like.
- Before becoming Mayor, Rudy was a tough-guy prosecutor who went after mob bosses with some success.
- He had a messy public divorce.
- He’s a survivor of prostate cancer.
Issues I think he cares about:
- Terrorism: well, duh.
Things I like about Rudy:
All I know about him is really based on my memory of his crackdowns in Times Square, and then of course his role following 9/11. When I saw him on television following the WTC attacks, my impression was “Hey, there’s a guy who looks like he’s in charge. He’ll probably run for President some day.” And here we are.
Things I don’t like about Rudy:
No real negatives here. His speaking style drives me up a wall, but hey.
(The First Impressions post for each candidate is where they’re starting out with me. What I know, or at least think I know about them, basically any starting impressions I’ve formed that they have to live up to or overcome. Sometimes it’s pretty sparse. Sometimes it may be outright incorrect. No fact checking has taken place on First Impressions posts.)
