The Fred & Jeri Thompson Show

By Bill | August 8, 2007 | Email This Post

Ah, the issues!

Okay, not really, but character attacks are beginning. This one’s targeted at Fred Thompson, who isn’t even officially a candidate yet (and someone’s scared already?) It’s about his wife, Jeri, who happens to be 25 years his junior and is, by all accounts, something of a hottie. (Can’t find a public domain picture here, sorry.)

Reuters is running an article claiming that Jeri’s basically doing a Yoko Ono on Thompson’s campaign, calling her “a divisive force” - meaning, I assume, that the people taking money to present Thompson in a certain way (i. e., political consultants) are having a hard time telling her what to do.

The result? Snide comments about the age difference between the two, about whether or not Jeri is a trophy wife (not that there’s anything wrong with that…) and Joe Scarborough suggesting that she “works the pole.” Supporters, meanwhile, see her a as a strong woman and an asset to the campaign: (”That’s the package, man, and it’s a good one” according to a Tennessee representative quoted in the article… am I wrong in that that’s mildly offensive, too? Is that Freedom Rock, man?)

No worries here, Fred, just looking for a little entertainment. I promise not to hold your attractive wife against you when voting time comes - heck, Frances Folsom Cleveland’s 27 year age difference with Grover rarely crosses my mind more than, say, once a fortnight. I even hope both sides are right… that she’s a genius and an asset to you, but also a divisive force. Nothing like a loose canon of a candidate wife to liven up the election… unless it’s a candidate that goes insane himself.

Which brings us to Tom Tancredo, who will be the subject of the next post.

Hold on, we have an update!

At the risk of cheapening the blog, we have another entry in the meaningless May-December Candidate Contest! Elizabeth Kucinich, wife of Democratic candidate Dennis Kucinich, is rather striking herself… and at an age difference of thirty-one years the couple easily outdoes both the Thompsons and Clevelands. And in terms of relative appearance, of the Billy Joel/Christie Brinkley syndrome, as Bloom County famously put it… well, you be the judge. On a serious note, why don’t he hear the same charges leveled at Dennis as at Fred Thompson?

Anyway, in the romance department, it looks like the sensitive hippie types outperform the macho men. Just ask Dick Cheney.

Thanks to Cracked.com’s review of candidate web sites for pointing this out.

Tom Tancredo? Is that even a real person? Sounds like a character from a nursery rhyme….
