Quickie: Mike Huckabee Loses His Mind

By Bill | September 4, 2007 | Email This Post

Or at least, talks way over his head.

According to this article, on ABC’s This Week With George Stephanopoulos, Huckabee said he would “make a strong Republican opponent to Democratic front-runner… Hillary Rodham Clinton.”

No, really, he said that.

Frankly Mike, at this stage of the game, you would get destroyed.

Now a lot can happen in politics, and by next summer maybe you’ll look like the second coming of George Washington, but the reality right now is that you would have no chance. Heck, you’re only a medium shot to win in your own party, for crying out loud. Sure, you picked up a lot of steam by coming in second in an early Iowa straw poll (with only half the votes of the front runner, it should be pointed out.) However, some folks think you’re running fourth… and that seems about right to me. But keep plugging away. Prove me wrong.

It’s an interesting strategy. It’s a long campaign, and nobody’s really happy with selection on the Republican side. With a little momentum and a big enough microphone, there’s always the chance that if you start talking like you’re the front-runner the media might believe you. Thus we have the ABC pronouncement and the headline-grabbing support for a ban on public smoking.

The sad part is, other than the self-aggrandizement, Huckabee’s central point is exactly right: the GOP cannot win by running a less Republican candidate. This is something the Democrats (ought to have) learned in 2004. You’ve got to give the public a clear choice. A close debate goes to the more believable participant, and watering down your message does not make one believable.

However, after flirting dangerously close with common sense, Mike then went on to say that Fred Thompson’s delayed entry into the race is because of Huckabee’s candidacy: “He’s looked at the fact that if he’s looking for a consistent conservative, that would be Mike Huckabee.” If the strategy holds, figure on something else controversial from Mike shortly after Fred throws his hat in the ring, an event reportedly coming up on Thursday.

We’ll see.
